In February 1954, 11-year-old Terence was involved in an explosion that caused severe chest and lung injuries from metal fragments. The NDE occurred two days after the accident while hospitalized. During a medical crisis where his lungs collapsed and required resuscitation, Terence experienced falling horizontally down a tunnel toward an incredibly bright light. He felt intense love and a powerful attraction to the light, describing it as "sweet" and wonderful. He felt no fear, only an incredible wanting for what was at or in the light. Suddenly he felt himself returning, not back up the tunnel but somehow out of it. His next memory was becoming aware of the hospital surroundings.
The light was extraordinarily bright but did not hurt his eyes. He described a "sweetness" to the light that was intense, as if he had heightened senses beyond normal perception. Time seemed to have no relevance during the experience. He remained on a respirator for a week before he could speak, and immediately wanted to talk about his wonderful light.
