Sévin experienced his NDE on the night of May 15-16, 2004, while in a coma at a Paris Hospital intensive care unit following aortic bypass surgery performed on May 4th. The surgery was necessitated by superior mesenteric artery occlusion, and he subsequently developed septicemic embolism requiring intensive antibiotic treatment and causing very high fever. His experience occurred in two distinct phases. In Phase One, he experienced flight through an extremely bright white space with a mild, muffled ambience, having no awareness of a physical body while surrounded by other similar beings. The flight occurred at low speed with no noise or air friction for approximately ten minutes. Phase Two began suddenly when he saw and dove into a tunnel at very high speed, again experiencing no noise or friction. Upon reaching the bottom, he made a conscious decision to return, which he believes was his decision to live. Everything stopped abruptly after this choice. He retained memories of family visits during the coma, particularly his eldest daughter speaking to him, caressing him, and writing her surname on his arm, to which he responded with slight movement. The experience left him with feelings of incredible peace, happiness, and unity with the universe.
