Nicholas was accidentally poisoned and almost instantly could not breathe, experiencing severe chest pain. Knowing he was dying, he ran to his brother's bedroom and laid on the bed. Suddenly he "popped" out of his body and was on the other side of the room, observing his shell on the bed. He encountered a brilliant Light that communicated with him through gentle laughter and profound wisdom.
The Light identified itself as "the great I am," explaining it comes to people as they wish to see it, that there's a golden thread in all religions, and Nicholas was a thread of the divine blanket. When Nicholas questioned if this was his imagination, the Light challenged him with "Is it Nick?!" making him more certain than ever. The Light told him his shell wouldn't die yet as he had chosen an experience to live that was far from over. He was told there is no hell except as lack of harmony, and heaven is harmony, available in or out of the body. Significantly, he received a prophecy that he would have a child late in life with his third wife, calling him Quentin - which came true when he had his first child at age 55. Nicholas maintains daily contact with the Light since the experience. He describes it as awakening from sleep to find the rest of the world still sleeping.
