On June 7, 2004, Mark H experienced sudden cardiac death while recovering from emergency open heart surgery following a failed angioplasty that had caused his coronary artery to rupture. He had previously suffered a stroke on May 27, followed by the surgical complications. While in the intensive coronary care unit, he experienced complete cardiac arrest lasting 4 minutes and 38 seconds, requiring four defibrillator shocks to revive him. Medical staff including nurses and doctors worked frantically to save his life while he was clinically dead.
During his cardiac arrest, Mark found himself on a beautiful road as a young boy about ten years old, carrying a willow branch with a red bandana like a hobo. He encountered both familiar and unfamiliar people on this road, exchanging smiles as they passed. He saw a breathtaking mountain with indescribable details, colors, and shadows beyond human language. He experienced the presence of God in all things, feeling completely filled with divine spirit and perfect satisfaction. Every desire of his soul was met instantly in this place where time and distance did not exist. A voice told Mark he must return because he had an unfinished task. Despite his protests and desire to stay in this perfect place, he was sent back through intense darkness with lightning bolts surrounding him. As he returned, he saw what appeared to be a stadium full of people cheering for those trying to save him. A young nurse named Debbie took his hand, looked into his soul, and told him "It is not your choice now! It is his now!" He stopped fighting and returned to consciousness fifteen hours later. The experience profoundly transformed Mark, who now sees through "the eyes of his heart" rather than just physical eyes. He feels God's presence in everything, speaks words that help others at precisely the right moments, has dreams that come true, and can sense others' suffering. Two days after his NDE, nurse Debbie visited him and he thanked her for being the angel God sent to help him return.
