On April 17, 2005, Matthjis, who had been diabetic for three years, experienced the worst hypoglycemic episode of his life. He woke during the night with dangerously low blood sugar and could barely walk. After eating something sweet and going to the refrigerator for a drink, everything went black before his eyes. He collapsed unconscious on his abdomen beside the refrigerator. Though the experience felt like only 20-30 seconds to him, the clock showed he had been unconscious for at least one hour.
During his unconscious state, Matthjis experienced a classic out-of-body experience, viewing himself from above in a bird's eye perspective. He saw his body lying on his abdomen next to the refrigerator exactly as it was positioned. The most striking aspect of his experience was the dramatic enhancement of visual perception - colors were incredibly intense, bright, clear, and pure in a way that defied normal description. He experienced massive peacefulness with absolute silence, a silence so complete he could not define it in words. Matthjis felt intense happiness and joy with no fear whatsoever during the experience. He then felt himself slowly descending back toward his body and suddenly returned to consciousness. He found himself lying next to the refrigerator exactly as he had seen from above, struggled to get up due to exhaustion, and slowly walked back to his bedroom. The experience did not change his religious views - he was not a believer before and states the experience made it even clearer to him that heaven, hell, God, and Christ do not exist. Despite this interpretation, he acknowledges the reality of the experience, noting he had his normal thought process throughout. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The experience contains the fundamental biblical element of the spirit/soul separating from the physical body, consistent with ecclesiastes "the spirit returns to God who gave it." Unbiblical elements: The experiencer explicitly rejects God and Christ, stating the experience confirmed his atheistic worldview. This interpretation directly contradicts biblical teaching that such experiences would lead one toward God, not away. His conclusion that the experience proves heaven and hell don't exist opposes core Christian doctrine. While the experience itself contains biblical elements, his interpretation is fundamentally anti-biblical.
