Laura R experienced a profound NDE as a small child in 1953 while playing at the beach. She stepped into a deep hole and went underwater, struggling to reach the surface. As she ran out of air, the panic left her and she felt as if she were breathing despite being underwater. She then experienced a clear separation from her body, seeing her tiny form curled in a fetal position receding into the dark green water below. She felt euphoria as she moved toward the surface and a brilliant, shimmering light just above the water. Before she could break through the surface to reach the light, she awoke on the beach with people pumping water out of her. The experience left her with no fear of death and a consuming interest in knowing the mind of God. She reports longing for liberation from flesh and that peaceful, beatific state she experienced.
