John accidentally ingested hard narcotics he mistook for sleeping pills in summer 1969. As he lay down, he fell into a deep trance-like state and felt his spirit leave his body. He rose to the top of his room and looked back at his body lying on the bed before his spirit passed through the roof.
From above his house, John's spirit continued ascending into space where he could observe Earth turning and galaxies in the heavens. A spiritual presence engulfed his spirit, which he felt was God, communicating that he could choose to stay or return to his body. Being young and in love, he chose to return. The experience left John with absolute certainty of an afterlife - a beautiful place characterized by great joy and peace. This fundamentally changed his religious views, perceiving the spiritual presence as far more loving and inclusive than traditionally preached, one that would never exclude anyone. John describes the experience as the most wonderful feeling, hoping to someday return to that spiritual realm in the heavens.
