John B, a journalist, underwent an angioplasty procedure in July 1987 when the wire being used to clear a blockage was too large for his small arteries. When the wire passed through the blockage, it caused total restriction of blood flow, triggering an immediate heart attack with flushing, nausea, and profuse sweating. Liquid nitroglycerin was administered as his blood pressure dropped and a nurse announced "He's going."
Suddenly all pain ceased and John experienced unprecedented comfort. While conscious and aware, he felt a warm, gentle sensation as the room became bathed in a warm orange glow. He observed himself rising from the table and saw the surgeons sitting beside his body near his hip area with arms folded, intently watching the vital sign monitors while nurses stood frozen watching the same displays. John rose to a corner of the room where he stopped and observed the scene below while feeling more loved than he could describe - wrapped in a blanket of love from everything in the universe. After consciously examining these wonderful feelings of wellbeing, peace, and warmth, he reluctantly thought "Well, I had better get back down there" and returned to his body.
