Joseph suffered catastrophic injuries in September 1980 including 90% bodily injuries, broken pelvic bone, L-4 vertebra damage, and skull fracture with bone fragments at the base of his skull. He died three times at Saint Mary's Hospital in Yakima, Washington, somehow having traveled a quarter mile with these severe injuries.

During his experience, Joseph encountered his father's parents (notably not his mother's parents) and saw his great grandfather wearing a tattered Civil War uniform. He observed a battlefield scene preparing for battle between British troops and Indians with Mohawk haircuts, with a relative on a well-kept brown and black horse.

Above the battlefield scene appeared a black silhouette of a king's head with large whiskers on his chin. As Joseph stretched to see more of this figure, a blinding white light shone through the jewels in the king's crown, burning his eyes and forcing him to turn away. The scene then shifted to a garage-like doorway where hundreds of spirits streamed into the blinding white light area.

Joseph experienced a pulling sensation toward a fiery area inside the tunnel of light that frightened him. He felt burning pain in his chest where doctors were using electric shock to restart his heart, feeling as if his breastbone was being pulled out. He returned to his body after these resuscitation efforts.

--- Biblical Summary ---

Biblical elements: The experience includes seeing deceased relatives, a tunnel of light, and multiple spirits moving toward light, consistent with biblical descriptions of the afterlife. The bright white light aligns with divine glory descriptions. The vision of historical figures and battles could represent spiritual warfare or judgment scenes. The return through medical intervention shows God's sovereignty over life and death timing.

Unbiblical elements: The appearance of a king figure with crown (possibly occult symbolism), the fiery area causing fear within the tunnel (suggesting partial hell vision), and the mixing of different historical periods in visions lack clear biblical precedent. The absence of explicit Christian figures or messages despite the dramatic nature of dying three times is notable.
