Jim Co, approximately 10 years old, experienced a near-drowning at a state park lake while his family was visiting. Unable to swim, he was playing in the water and kept venturing deeper, intending to stop when it reached his chin. Unaware of a five-foot drop-off just past the buoyed safety line, he suddenly went under and began thrashing desperately to reach the surface. After struggling briefly, he experienced a tremendous jerk within his mind, describing it as something automatic occurring as a natural part of the dying process. Suddenly he was outside his body floating in a semi-conscious state, completely content and no longer struggling. He felt unbelievably happy and enveloped by a loving presence. His next memory was his father dragging him from the deep end to shallow water and onto shore. His father had jumped into the lake fully clothed to rescue him. Jim distinctly remembers feeling disappointed about being brought back because he didn't want to leave that blissful state. On shore, his father dried money from his wallet on the sand, telling Jim "you were just about a goner." The experience left Jim with a profound memory of the peace and love he felt while out of his body.
