In 1969 Vietnam, a Green Beret combat trainer was critically wounded by a mortar shell explosion. He floated above his body without pain, attempted to check his own pulse but his fingers went through his neck. Corpsman Skip arrived and began calling his name. The soldier was suddenly eye-to-eye with Skip despite his body being mostly in the ground. He experienced a hellish realm - a trench filled with blood, body parts, and dismembered Vietnamese victims screaming at him, including a six-year-old girl he had mistakenly shot thinking she had a grenade when it was actually a puppy. After traversing this horrific gauntlet, his deceased friend Ed from high school helped him out, saying he had become too callous and needed to remember his true self. Ed told him his mission was to help and protect others, not kill. He felt a pop and was instantly back in his body in pain. Skip later confirmed the details of the rescue. Since then, he feels a compelling need to protect women and children and volunteers building shelters for the abused.
