Gloria M experienced a severe asthma attack triggered by a chest infection that led to respiratory failure in the emergency room. Her body shut down and she developed "Silent Chest" where no air could enter or exit her lungs, requiring placement on a ventilator in the intensive care unit. As the anesthesia mask was placed and medication injected, she lost consciousness and found herself in darkness, initially afraid.
She then shot down a tunnel with golden lights shining brilliantly like squares or mesh all around, traveling at great speed while knowing she wouldn't crash. At the tunnel's end, she saw a bright light with a slightly darker circle and began to slow down. She encountered a massive angelic being with beautiful white wings stretched out, so large she couldn't see its face. The wings began closing around her as a voice said, "Don't be afraid, we will hold you until it is all over. You are going to be all right. We will stay with you and hold you." As the wings enveloped her, she was filled with white light that made her heart soar, experiencing peace, joy, and no fear. The primary observation was her awareness during intubation and sedation, with background awareness of medical staff working. Family members reported her eyes were open but "no one was at home" during visits. She experienced everything happening at once in a different reality from normal life. The experience left her more peaceful, less critical of others, and able to let go of hurts more easily.
