Hattie A experienced severe chest and upper stomach pains the night before her cardiac arrest, initially misdiagnosed as acid reflux. On Thursday morning around 7:00 AM, she called 911 and her daughter before experiencing a cardiac arrest that left her unconscious until Saturday. During this time, she had an out-of-body experience where she floated above her body, not initially recognizing it was herself, feeling sympathy for "the woman" who looked dead and wanting to help her.
Between Thursday and Saturday, while unconscious in the intensive care unit, she perceived many people in her room bending over her and speaking in whispers, though staff later said only a couple visitors at a time were allowed. She experienced an unusual quietness with her ears feeling plugged, yet had incredibly fast thoughts and heightened awareness. She later realized the woman she saw from above was herself, describing a sense of despair and wanting to help what she initially perceived as another person. The primary veridical observations include seeing herself from above without initial recognition, perceiving multiple presences in her ICU room when officially only limited visitors were allowed, and awareness of her surroundings while clinically unconscious. She experienced a barrier or involuntary return to life. After the experience, she developed heightened sensitivity to others' pain, can no longer eat meat, and feels a great love in the universe around her daily.
