On October 3, 2005, Fena attempted suicide through an overdose of pills and alcohol after years of emotional pain. She called her sister to say goodbye without revealing her intentions, but passed out during the call. Her sister called 911 from Mississippi, eventually reaching local emergency services who found her unconscious after 40 minutes of searching. During her unconscious state, she experienced a swooshing sound like a parachute opening, followed by being pulled through a tunnel-like energy. She found herself in a pure white, cloud-like realm where she felt no pain, suffering, or hunger.
In this space, she encountered a presence identifying itself as Jesus and her Father, though she saw no physical forms. She experienced an instantaneous life review that took a fraction of a second but contained everything. When asked how she thought she did in life, she laughingly replied "much like my school report - could have done better." She was given a choice to stay or return. Initially undecided, she was shown a vision of her family crying around her hospital bed, which prompted her decision to return, particularly being moved by her mother's tears. She also mentioned not having had her children yet. Upon awakening in the emergency room, she fought medical staff, begging to be allowed to stay "on the other side." Her first words to her friend Carroll were "There is life after death. There is another side, I was there." The experience left her with a strong sense of unfinished purpose and leadership responsibility, running a large social network for singles while paradoxically feeling deeply lonely.
