During summer 1981, Derric B was at a church swimming party when another child tossed him off a raft as a prank. Unable to swim, Derric panicked and went under, screaming for help underwater and breathing in water until darkness came. From a floating perspective, he observed a boy face down in the pool with no movement or life, not initially realizing he was looking at himself.
After everything went black, Derric remained aware as light slowly engulfed everything. He felt indescribable warmth, love, and peace. A voice told him it wasn't his time and he must go back. He awoke leaning over a rocking chair vomiting water, wanting to return to where he had been. After passing out, he woke in the hospital on life support with his father by his side. He saw a man at the foot of his bed whom others couldn't see, who remained until he left the hospital. A Boy Scout aged 10-12 performed life-saving CPR and chest compressions. The drowning was published in the Daily Oklahoman, and both families were invited to the state capitol where the governor awarded the Boy Scout and gave Derric free swimming lessons. The Boy Scout later joined the Oklahoma City Fire Department. Derric eventually learned to swim at age 28 from Navy SEALs instructors. Veridical Observations: Derric observed his own body floating face down in the pool from an out-of-body perspective. He saw an invisible man at the foot of his hospital bed who stayed until discharge, whom others could not see. Aftermath: Since the accident, Derric feels he sees life differently from others and has been searching for something undefined. He can sometimes sense presences not of this world. Medical testing revealed his brain and neurological functioning was ten times more active than average. He believes the experience unlocked things in his mind and gave him unlimited knowledge and questions about existence beyond conventional boundaries. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The experience at a church event included divine intervention through a voice declaring it wasn't his time, overwhelming divine love and peace, an invisible spiritual presence (possibly an angel) watching over him in the hospital, and a transformative encounter with divine light. The life-saving Boy Scout could represent God working through others. Unbiblical elements: Claims of sensing otherworldly presences could be interpreted as mediumistic abilities. However, this might also represent heightened spiritual awareness consistent with biblical accounts of those who have encountered the divine.
