In 1989, Jake and his elite "Hotshots" firefighting crew of forty men and women were deployed to fight a dangerous forest fire on a steep mountain peak. Their back-fire strategy turned catastrophic when wind suddenly changed direction, causing trees to erupt in an explosive conflagration that instantly consumed all oxygen near the ground. One by one, the entire crew succumbed to suffocation, falling to earth as they crawled desperately trying to escape. Jake felt his life ending, thinking "This is it. I am going to die" as his consciousness lifted into the air above his lifeless body in the trench below. Remarkably, he saw his entire crew also standing in the air above their own fallen bodies - this was a shared, collective transition. He noticed specific details like crew member Jose, born with a defective foot, now standing with a perfectly straight foot in his spiritual form. A brilliant light appeared, brighter than sunlight on snow, and Jake met his deceased great-grandfather who acted as his guide. Given a choice to stay or return, Jake feared his body would be horribly burned, but his great-grandfather communicated a profound promise: neither he nor any crew members who chose to return would suffer ill effects from the fire, done so God's power over the elements would be made manifest. Trusting this divine assurance, he chose to return. After the event, the crew gathered and were astonished to discover they had each undergone some type of near-death experience, with some having seen and conversed with each other during the episode. Despite heat so intense it melted their metal tools, every single firefighter survived without any burns or ill effects - a medically impossible outcome serving as miraculous corroboration. Their immediate spontaneous response was to kneel together in prayer thanking the Lord, and throughout that summer they frequently discussed their miraculous shared adventure that transcended individual backgrounds and united them in spiritual truth.
