At age four in Glasgow, Scotland during summer 1974, Elaine G was playing outside after a dock rat infestation had been cleared by the army. An older boy threw a large live rat at her face, causing the rat to bite her, and her heart stopped. Her mother, a registered nurse on the 11th floor, ran down to revive her. Elaine was clinically dead for approximately 3-4 minutes based on how long it took her mother to reach her and perform resuscitation.
During her clinical death, Elaine felt weightless and calm, finding herself in a bright, sunlit green meadow that was still and quiet. She felt no threat, only profound peace and ease unlike anything experienced before or since. She encountered human figures including a woman she sensed was a deceased relative, though she couldn't identify who. The beings told her it was not her time and she had to go back. Despite not wanting to return, she had no choice. When she returned to her body, panic and pain immediately set in. Veridical Observations: From her out-of-body state, Elaine encountered beings she believed were deceased relatives. Years later, when shown a photo of her paternal grandmother who died in childbirth, she recognized her as the woman who held her hand in the meadow - despite never having seen her picture before this confirmation. Aftermath: The experience left Elaine with permanent calm about death and the ability to comfort others fearing death. She experienced a complete shift in religious beliefs, converting from Protestant Christianity to paganism, feeling that biblical descriptions didn't match her experience. At age twenty-six during childbirth, she had another near-death episode where she believes her deceased grandmother warned her never to carry another child or it would kill her. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The experience included leaving the body, entering a paradise-like realm (green meadow with perfect peace), encountering deceased relatives who served as guides, receiving a message about divine timing ("not your time"), and experiencing supernatural peace and joy that surpasses earthly understanding. Unbiblical elements: The experience led to rejection of Christianity in favor of pagan nature worship. Elaine explicitly states that "what was described in the Bible didn't come close" to her experience, leading her to abandon her Protestant upbringing for paganism.
