A patient undergoing bypass surgery to correct a valve defect experienced prolonged cardiac arrest when surgeons could not get him off the bypass machine. Each attempt to remove bypass support resulted in blood pressure plunging. Remarkably, after 20 minutes with no blood flow to the brain, electrical activity appeared on the ECG, developing into a heartbeat with rising blood pressure. The patient was successfully resuscitated and transferred to ICU with no neurological deficits despite the extended period without circulation. During his death state, the patient reported traveling through a tunnel toward a bright light and floating around the operating room observing the scene below. This detail was particularly striking as there was no way he could have known about these notes before surgery since they were calls received during the operation. Dr. Rudy was astounded by the accuracy, especially the Post-it notes detail, stating "there's no way he could have described that before the operation because I didn't have any calls." The patient remained unconscious in ICU for days after resuscitation, making the observations even more inexplicable. Dr. Rudy declared this convinced him "there's something out there."
