In the summer of 1976, James S., a Jewish man, died due to an allergic reaction to penicillin described as an advancing cataclysmic reaction. During his NDE, he found his grandmother standing there, which he did not consider odd at the time. He was aware of some sort of barrier between them - possibly a river or rift - that he knew he could not cross initially. Behind his grandmother and others, somewhat in the middle distance, he became aware of a beautiful city.
The city was golden, either from its own internal light or from a golden light at sunset. There were beautiful trees and flowers with lovely smells. The city awakened in him a desperate yearning to go there, though he couldn't explain why. He could somehow see that there were busy people in the houses, which had windows and flat roofs. Suddenly, he found he could cross the divide and felt simply wonderful, with no pain and powerful feelings of peacefulness. The specific observations included recognizing his deceased grandmother, perceiving a barrier or divide preventing initial entry, seeing the golden city with internal light, observing architectural details of houses with windows and flat roofs, and seeing busy people within the houses. The golden city description aligns with biblical descriptions of the New Jerusalem. The experience transitioned from separation to union as he crossed the barrier, accompanied by complete pain relief and profound peace, suggesting the transition from earthly suffering to heavenly peace.
