M.K. McDaniel spent three weeks in a coma in 2019 after catching pneumonia and suffering lung failure, with doctors giving her only a 38% chance of survival. Before intubation, she was told she would receive amnesia medication and wouldn't remember anything. However, she had vivid experiences beginning with a hellish realm. She woke in a dark, quiet place that morphed into a scary scene with demons resembling nine-foot-tall Bigfoot creatures. They forced her to do impossible tasks like cutting down a forest of blackberry bushes with paper scissors, with the plants growing back immediately. Though in a coma for three weeks, she felt trapped there for years, spending most time walking on an endless solitary road.
After somehow escaping the hellish realm, she was enveloped with huge bliss and joy in a bright warm light that settled into what felt like a cathedral with marble walls and high ceiling. To her right, she saw an architect's table with a huge book like a Bible, open about halfway. Someone told her it contained her life and she was only halfway through. When she said it would be too hard and wanted to stay, she was told "you've got too much left to do." She felt thrown out without seeing anything else of the heavenly realm. The specific observations included the detailed description of the demonic beings, the impossible tasks, the architectural features of the heavenly space, and the large book showing her life's midpoint. She never felt dead during the experience, just confused like "Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz." When the lights came back on, she found herself on the ventilator with family around her, deeply confused by the transition from her vivid otherworldly experiences to the hospital setting.
