Jeff Markin, a 53-year-old mechanic with red hair, arrived at Palm Beach Gardens Hospital emergency room on October 20, 2006, experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, and anxiety. Upon providing his information at the admissions desk, he suddenly collapsed, his head hitting the linoleum floor. A security guard rushed to cradle him while emergency personnel responded. Jeff had suffered a massive myocardial infarction - a severe heart attack. The emergency team worked on him for approximately forty minutes, administering standard cardiac medications including aspirin, heparin, beta-blockers, and thrombolytics. He was intubated, ventilated, and shocked with defibrillators seven times. His heart went into ventricular fibrillation followed by complete cardiac arrest - he flatlined. By the time Dr. Crandall arrived as the senior cardiologist, Jeff's lips, fingers, and toes were cyanotic - black with death from lack of oxygen. His pupils were dilated and fixed. He had been down too long with no hope of recovery. Jeff was officially declared dead at 8:05 a.m. As Dr. Crandall was leaving, he felt God telling him to pray for the man. He prayed "Father God, I cry out for this man's soul. If he does not know You as his Lord and Savior, raise him from the dead now, in Jesus' name." His arm shot up in a gesture of prayer. He then asked the ER doctor to shock Jeff one more time. After the shock, Jeff's heart immediately restarted with a perfect rhythm of 75 beats per minute. His abdomen and chest began moving, he started breathing on his own, and his cyanotic fingers and toes began twitching. He was mumbling and showing signs of life. Jeff reported experiencing being in a casket in a dark room for eternity - which he identified as hell. No family, coworkers, or friends came to visit him. He sat alone in total darkness for eternity. After an eternal period, men came and wrapped him up and threw him in the trash. This vision of eternal separation from God and being discarded as worthless deeply affected Jeff. Following his return to life, Jeff accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior while still in his hospital bed, becoming born again after having previously rejected Christianity twenty years earlier when his wife became a believer.
