Mike Nickols experienced his third heart attack at home after returning from a business trip. The pain in his chest was so intense he could not move or speak, frozen with his arms against his chest. Emergency medical technicians arrived quickly, including a neighbor EMT who responded within sixty seconds. During transport and treatment in the emergency room, Mike experienced dialogue with God about suffering, comparing his pain to Christ's experience on the cross. When God explained that overwhelming him with divine presence would eliminate the suffering, Mike's pain suddenly stopped as his heart ceased beating. Mike found himself outside his body, observing himself kneeling at a wooden altar rail with a padded kneeler, positioned before a magnificent stained-glass window approximately forty feet high and thirty feet wide, decorated in red, blue, and clear colors. After watching himself complete his prayer and rise, he moved to the left where three large windows without glass opened to the outside. Through these openings, protected only by a thin veil-like screen, he gazed into what he understood to be eternity itself. The vista revealed a beautiful meadow framed by pleasant forest, with various animals including a majestic elk with an impressive rack standing in the meadow's center, appearing to look directly at him. Behind the trees, he could hear ocean waves breaking on an unseen beach. An authoritative voice then spoke from everywhere - from every molecule within him, throughout the room, and from eternity itself. The voice asked with judge-like authority: Are you ready for this manuscript to go to the publisher? Understanding this meant the manuscript of his life for evaluation, Mike responded fearfully that he trusted in Jesus completely as his hope, but acknowledged he had not completed everything God created him to do. The voice commanded Then live what you believe before Mike instantly returned to the emergency room. Medical records indicate his heart was restarted using defibrillator paddles three times. This near-death experience profoundly impacted Mike's subsequent life and ministry, becoming central to his spiritual understanding.
