David was five or six years old when his uncle took him swimming with several high school friends. Unable to swim, David played by the edge while the older boys swam. Attempting to cross to a rock ledge on the other side, he tried to inch across a narrow part of the stream about fifteen feet above the pool area. Growing confident with each step, he took a giant step and went under.
Immediately upon going underwater, David was separated from his body by about fifteen feet. He had a clear out-of-body experience with remarkable veridical perceptions. From outside his body, he could see himself struggling underwater through the muddy creek water with perfect clarity. He could see the outline of the creek where he went under and even below into the blackness. Most remarkably, while drowning underwater, he clearly heard one of the boys tell his uncle "your nephew is drowning." Throughout the experience, David felt no fear whatsoever while watching himself drown - it was peaceful and calm, as if watching someone else on a big screen TV. He had no sensation of his physical body at all. The moment his uncle pulled him from the water, he was instantly back in his body, coughing, screaming, and terrified. He was never unconscious during the event. David didn't understand what had happened until ten years later when he read a book on out-of-body experiences. He has since verified the incident multiple times with his uncle and revisited the location in 2004, finding it unchanged after 46 years. The experience convinced him of the existence of a soul that survives beyond the body and the possibility of reincarnation. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: Clear out-of-body experience with consciousness existing apart from the physical body aligns with biblical understanding of spirit/body distinction (2 Corinthians 5:8). The peaceful observation of his own dying body reflects the peace that comes with spiritual separation from physical death. Unbiblical elements: David's conclusion about reincarnation contradicts biblical teaching of appointed once to die then judgment (Hebrews 9:27). While the experience itself is compatible with biblical accounts, his interpretation embracing reincarnation represents a departure from Christian orthodoxy.
