Kalima from Kona, Hawaii, died from an unspecified cause and was being prepared for funeral when she suddenly revived, startling mourners gathered around her rigid form and ashen face. She confirmed "I died, as you know" and described a classic out-of-body experience where she stood beside her body looking down at herself, aware of two distinct forms - her conscious self standing and her dead body on the bed. After observing her corpse, she walked away through her village to a neighboring area transformed into a vast spirit metropolis with hundreds of houses and thousands of spirits. She recognized some spirits who spoke to her, and the overwhelming atmosphere was pure bliss with joy on every face and happy laughter everywhere. Continuing through more villages of happy spirits, she felt such complete joy that her heart sang and she was glad to be dead. At Pele's volcano, spirits told her she must return as it wasn't her time, and despite begging to stay, they beat her and drove her back. Upon reaching home, she stood beside her body filled with revulsion at the horrid, loathsome thing compared to the beautiful creatures she had seen. Spirits forced her back through her big toe, and when she passed her waist, she surrendered and opened her eyes. She never varied her account and permanently regretted returning from perfect happiness.
