Ka-ilio-hae, a man from Maui, experienced a near-death journey during a prolonged illness when his soul separated from his body through his left eye. Upon separation, he perceived his corpse as a great mountain with eyes like dark caves, a sight that frightened him along with the sounds of his family mourning. He flew from his rooftop toward the land of ghosts where he was met by his deceased sister who possessed the power to return spirits to their bodies. She guided him through the spirit world, warning him not to enter houses or eat food lest he be trapped forever. They proceeded to the court of Walia, the high chief of ghosts, passing three watchmen who posed ritual questions his sister helped him answer correctly. The final barrier was a gateway of two crushing heads which he pushed aside using proper incantations. Walia questioned him about his earthly lineage, and after receiving his full genealogical history, gave him a mission to return and warn his people about coming troubles, threatening to cast him to Milu's underworld if he refused. Despite reluctance and attempts to hide, his sister forced his return, ultimately pushing his spirit back through his foot into his physically repulsive body. After recovery, he shared his detailed journey with his family, providing them with an authoritative map of the afterlife.
