Recorded by British missionary Robert Keable, this describes a Sotho man who suffered severe illness leading to apparent death. He remained dead for three days with funerary preparations made, though he felt he had been away many years. After dying, his soul traveled to a river serving as boundary to the afterlife. He could not cross and saw many other souls gathered on the bank waiting. Spirits from the other side made regular trips to select new souls, but he was repeatedly passed over. The spirits told him he would only be selected when his knees had hardened from kneeling in prayer - a direct injunction to adopt Christian prayer practice. Trapped in this liminal space, he learned to pray. His devotion was finally recognized and he was permitted to cross. On the other side, he arrived at God's throne where he was not invited to stay but ordered to return to earth to teach repentance. God bestowed upon him miraculous gift - though previously illiterate, God gave him power to read the Bible. The man returned to life, interrupting his funeral preparations. He immediately demonstrated his ability to read the Bible despite illiteracy, and possessed newfound healing and prophetic powers. He became known as a prophet who died and rose again, drawing large crowds and effecting many conversions.
