Marwe was a young Chaga girl whose near-death experience began with an act of despair over neglecting the family crop. Fearing her parents' anger, she jumped into a pool with intent to drown. This suicide attempt led to clinical death or unconsciousness during which her soul traveled to another realm. Upon entering the water, she was transported to another world where she met an old woman and children in a hut. Though told she could rest, Marwe chose to help the children with their work and refused to eat anything offered - following the common trope where consuming food of the dead prevents return. After some time, she decided to return home. The old woman presented her with a choice: shall I hit you with the cold or with the hot? Marwe chose cold, and the woman instructed her to dip her arms and legs into a pot. When she withdrew them, they were miraculously covered in bangles and jewelry. The old woman also gave her a beaded petticoat and prophetic knowledge, telling her the name of her future husband. Marwe returned to life, emerging from the pool transformed. The prophecy came to pass exactly - she met the named man, found him suffering from disease, and used newfound healing abilities to cure him before marriage. She later brought her own husband back from death, cementing her status as a powerful healer with direct connection to the spirit world.
