Daniel was a fourth-year university student when he developed a severe illness with fever reaching 104 degrees. Despite medical intervention, his condition worsened dramatically - he lost weight from 171 to 77 pounds and became practically paralyzed, only able to move his eyes. The hospital prepared him for death and called a priest for last rites.
During this critical state, Daniel had a remarkable veridical experience. While in his room, he clearly heard his father's conversation with a doctor approximately 65 feet away in the medical supply room. His father was crying and asking why this was happening to his son, saying he would prefer to die rather than his son. Daniel wanted to comfort his father but couldn't move or speak. When his father later came to his room with a smile, Daniel knew the entire conversation though his father was unaware he had heard it. As his condition deteriorated further, Daniel closed his eyes and was suddenly absorbed into a dark tunnel traveling upward at high velocity. He saw a brilliant light that grew brighter as he approached - like a thousand atomic bombs but not painful. He entered this light and felt transported to God's presence, experiencing infinite peace and warmth. A large angel with phosphorescent wings carried him through a paradise of living colors and a transparent river. He was shown a life review on a giant screen, seeing his faults from childhood, feeling remorse. When he asked to return to take care of things, he suddenly opened his eyes in his hospital bed. Remarkably, Daniel immediately felt his strength return. He pulled out his tubes and needles, stood up, and walked to the bathroom on his own - shocking the medical staff who called it miraculous. Within three days he was almost normal, and after seven days was discharged. The diagnosis was meningitis. His recovery was so dramatic that his doctor referred him for psychiatric evaluation when Daniel said he had spoken with God. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: Experience contains classic biblical NDE elements including separation from body, journey through darkness toward divine light, encounter with God's presence, angelic beings with wings, paradise realm with river (reminiscent of Revelation), and life review showing moral accountability. The immediate physical healing mirrors biblical accounts of divine healing. Unbiblical elements: The description of colors as "phosphorescent" and "living" suggests new age concepts. Daniel's statement that hell is created by one's own conscience rather than a real place contradicts biblical teaching. His later out-of-body experiences and meditation practices, plus belief in Buddha, Krishna, and Mohammed as equal to Christ, indicate syncretistic beliefs incompatible with biblical Christianity.
