Gitshee Gauzinee, an Ojibwe hunter, experienced a transformative near-death experience before 1825 that led directly to significant changes in his community's sacred burial rituals. He succumbed to an unspecified illness and was considered to have died, but his wife and community members suspected his death might not be permanent and made the crucial decision to delay his burial. He remained in this death-like state for a full four days before spontaneously reviving. After his consciousness separated from his body, Gitshee Gauzinee found himself traveling on the path of the dead, a well-trodden road to the spirit world. He journeyed along this path for three days, during which he began feeling the familiar sensation of hunger. Observing game animals along the path, his hunter's instincts surfaced and he immediately regretted not bringing his gun. This practical concern sparked a conscious decision to turn back to his lodge to retrieve his weapon rather than continuing to the land of the dead. On his return journey, traveling against the flow of souls, he encountered other spirits heading toward the afterlife. He made a critical observation: these spirits were visibly overburdened, struggling to carry excessive quantities of supplies like kettles, weapons, and food that their living relatives had interred with them as grave goods. While these spirits kindly shared some belongings with him, he remained focused on returning home. As he neared his lodge, he confronted a barrier of waving fire encircling his home, a common motif in Ojibwe return-from-death narratives. He summoned courage and leaped directly through the flames, instantly returning to his body. His testimony about overburdened spirits led his tribe to drastically reduce grave goods, ensuring easier journey for souls.
