A prominent Mi'kmaq leader experienced a foundational near-death experience before 1675 that became the primary source of the entire tribe's belief system concerning soul immortality and the afterlife. The man, described as one of the most prominent men of the nation, suffered an apparent death that was so profound his community considered him deceased before he unexpectedly revived. The specific cause of his clinical death is not recorded, but the event commanded the full attention of his people. Following his apparent death, the leader's soul embarked on a journey to the realm of the dead where he had a direct personal encounter with the supreme ruler of that domain, a deity identified as Papkootparout. This meeting was not a trial or judgment but rather a divine audience in which knowledge was bestowed. The ruler offered the man certain fruits to eat, which were the specific sustenance of souls residing in that realm. Rather than keeping the man in the Land of Souls, Papkootparout granted him special dispensation to return to the world of the living with a sacred purpose. The deity commissioned him as a messenger, tasking him to inform his people about the existence and nature of the Land of Souls, knowledge that had been unknown to them until that time. The man was sent back with foundational revelation for his entire culture. Upon return to life, the leader faithfully recounted his entire experience to the Mi'kmaq people, delivering the message from the ruler of the dead. His mission complete, he died again shortly thereafter, this time permanently. The Mi'kmaq accepted his account as indubitable truth, and this single NDE became the sole basis for their conviction that souls after departure from bodies had a place to which they went.
