A converted Wyandot woman experienced an exceptionally influential near-death experience around 1646 that sparked one of the earliest recorded religious revitalization movements. The woman, who had embraced Christianity, died from an unspecified cause and was buried according to Christian custom in a Christian cemetery. She remained in the grave for one full day before miraculously reviving and rising from her burial site, an event seen as an undeniable miracle. Upon death, instead of finding the peaceful paradise promised by missionaries, her soul was taken directly to the heaven of the French, which she discovered to be a realm of fire, cruelty, and unimaginable torment. She witnessed Christians actively burning the souls of Indigenous people, interpreting this as malevolent possession. Her welcome to this heaven was with firebrands, burning torches, and inconceivable cruelties and torments. Though her body was in the grave for only a day, her subjective experience of suffering in this fiery hell-heaven felt as if it lasted for many years, demonstrating profound temporal distortion. Eventually, a certain person moved with compassion released her from chains and showed her an escape route. This benevolent being pointed her toward a valley serving as pathway to the realm reserved for Indigenous people who had resisted conversion. This Indigenous spirit world was the complete antithesis - a place of delights and goodness without evil. From the valley's edge, she saw familiar villages, fields, and heard joyful sounds of communal dancing and feasting. Driven by urgency to warn her relatives of terrible spiritual danger, she chose to return to her body rather than enter the blissful Indigenous afterlife. Her dramatic return and testimony had explosive effect, spreading everywhere and becoming an article of faith.
