An Algonquin man experienced a remarkable near-death experience around 1585 that occurred during his own funeral ceremony. The man was considered dead by his community, who were actively engaged in performing his funeral rites when he spontaneously revived. This public revival during the funeral made his subsequent testimony exceptionally powerful and credible to the mourners present. While his funeral was underway, the man experienced classic out-of-body consciousness separation from his physical form. His soul began walking along a clearly defined path that was markedly different from the perilous road experienced by the wicked man. This idyllic and inviting path was lined with numerous houses and abundant fruit-bearing trees, painting a picture of a prosperous, peaceful realm. The imagery suggested a heavenly land of plenty where there was no want or struggle. As he proceeded along this beautiful path, he encountered his own deceased father, who acted as a spiritual guide or gatekeeper. The father gently informed his son that it was not yet his time to remain in this blissful world. He gave his son an explicit mission to return to his body and tell his people about the happiness of the other realm, providing a firsthand account of the joy and peace awaiting the good. Upon returning to his body, the man dramatically interrupted his own funeral ceremony by awakening. His story spread quickly throughout the community, providing direct experiential proof of a highly desirable afterlife. Combined with the wicked man's account, these testimonies created a complete cosmology of dualistic afterlife where moral conduct determined one's eternal fate.
