Laurelynn, a college tennis player on scholarship, underwent what should have been a routine 20-minute laparoscopic procedure. The physician exerted excessive force during the initial incision, puncturing her abdominal aorta, right iliac artery, inferior vena cava, and bowel in two places, causing her to lose nearly 60% of her blood volume. Her pulse stopped and another physician performed emergency surgery to save her life.
During her clinical death, Laurelynn found herself floating above her body, observing the frantic surgical team from the right side near the ceiling. She saw red blood everywhere - splattered on gowns and floor, pooling in her open abdominal cavity. She felt wonderful freedom and wanted to tell the distressed staff she was fine. She then traveled to another realm of total peace and bliss, enveloped in warm darkness and unconditional love. A whitish-yellow light appeared on the horizon. She encountered her brother-in-law who had died seven months earlier. Though he had no physical form, she could feel his presence, smile, and humor. She felt total acceptance and love from him despite previous guilt about not spending time with him before his death. During a life review, she experienced two childhood incidents from the other person's perspective - feeling the hurt she caused a five-year-old girl through teasing and the rejection felt by a twelve-year-old boy she had mocked for writing her a love letter. Other beings conveyed knowledge that made everything about existence finally make sense. Her brother-in-law told her it wasn't her time, that there had been a mistake, and she needed to return. He also communicated that suicide would not bring her back to this realm. His final message was to tell his sister he was fine. She then slammed back into her body experiencing excruciating pain. After the NDE, Laurelynn's values completely transformed. Material things became unimportant while love, kindness, knowledge-seeking and conscious living became paramount. She no longer fears death and feels she received a second chance at life.
