Steve, an American man, suffered a severe asthma attack that escalated to the point where his heart stopped beating. The cardiac arrest resulted from the severe respiratory crisis caused by the asthma attack.
During his cardiac arrest, Steve became aware of a powerful presence beside him that was both comforting and of great magnitude and power. He then began a comprehensive life review where he not only re-experienced events from his own perspective but simultaneously experienced them from other people's points of view. He described: "you feel their pain, you feel the sting; you feel the hurt [caused to others by your actions]. It was a horrifying realization that I wasn't the person I thought I was." He discovered he had been deceitful, had hurt people, and had lied, all of which he had previously justified by rationalizing that people deserved such treatment. However, experiencing their actual pain made him conclude his life had been a failure. Steve's veridical observations included directly experiencing the emotional pain he had caused others, feeling exactly what they had felt. He could see through his own self-deceptions and lies, viewing events from "a higher reality, the truth of the matter." The judgment he experienced came entirely from himself, not from any external source, though the being with him sent comforting messages. He gained complete clarity about his moral failures and the reality that his rationalizations had been false. The experience made him feel he was given a second chance to live more meaningfully. Steve felt the experience offered him an opportunity to change, hoping that "next time I get back to the life review it wouldn't be the same, or at least they would say he tried," and he might receive "a higher grade!" for his improved life.
