Karen, a thirty-two-year-old mother of two children ages six and nine, underwent a spinal fusion procedure in 1982. The last thing she recalled was being given general anesthetic before losing consciousness. During surgery, life-threatening bleeding occurred that required emergency intervention.
During this surgical crisis, Karen experienced her consciousness as separate from her body, positioned near the ceiling with full awareness. She observed her surgeon frantically trying to stop her from bleeding to death, and due to the stress, he was swearing at a nurse to fetch blood immediately. She reported: "I was able to reexperience myself in all these events in my life, but just as importantly, I was able to experience the impact of my actions and words on those other people with whom I had interacted... I felt so very sorry and sad about them [her poor actions] within my own heart." Karen's veridical observations included specific details of the surgical emergency. She witnessed the surgeon's frantic efforts to control the bleeding, heard him swearing at the nurse due to stress, and observed the nurse being ordered to fetch blood urgently. She could see the entire surgical scene from her vantage point near the ceiling. Most remarkably, during her life review, she experienced not only her own perspective but also felt the emotional impact of her actions on others, experiencing their feelings directly. The experience had a tremendous impact on Karen despite happening very quickly. The ability to feel how her actions had affected others left her with deep remorse for negative actions and a transformed understanding of interpersonal relationships.
