In 1996, Wayne was helping move a broken-down car off the street when another vehicle rammed into him from behind, crushing him between two cars. The impact was so severe it bent the frames on both vehicles. He was rushed to the hospital on a gurney, feeling he was going to die and welcoming the release from the intense pain before losing consciousness.
Wayne came out into light and found himself in an upper corner of the emergency room looking down at his body on the gurney. He was not disturbed by being dead or seeing his body below. He experienced a state of euphoria and perfect peace, with no pain, wants, or needs of any kind. He had a sense of being home and felt himself floating in the air above the gurney where his body lay. Wayne observed his body on the emergency room gurney from an elevated corner position. He could see the medical team working on his severely injured body below. Despite the traumatic nature of his injuries, he felt complete peace and a sense of being home rather than distress. The experience transformed Wayne's understanding of death, removing fear and providing him with certainty that consciousness continues beyond physical death. The sense of being home and the complete absence of pain or needs while observing his injured body gave him lasting peace about mortality.
