Susan, an American woman, suffered a cardiac arrest in 2013 following a severe allergic reaction. The anaphylactic response was so severe that it caused her heart to stop, requiring immediate intervention from the hospital code blue team. She was in a hospital setting when the reaction occurred, allowing for rapid medical response to her life-threatening emergency.
During her cardiac arrest, Susan observed the medical team enter and surround what she initially thought was another person lying next to her. It never occurred to her that she was observing her own body. She felt very calm while watching, but felt sympathy for the lady (herself) as the code blue team struggled to restart her heart. She watched herself being intubated with chest compressions and observed the rotation of team members during the resuscitation efforts. Susan's primary observation was watching the code blue team's organized response, including the intubation procedure, chest compressions, and systematic rotation of personnel during CPR. Her initial inability to recognize her own body and the feeling of detachment while observing with sympathy for "the lady" demonstrated the separation of consciousness from physical form. The experience left Susan with a new understanding of consciousness existing independently from the body. Her calm observation of her own critical medical emergency, initially not even recognizing herself, provided her with evidence of consciousness continuation beyond cardiac arrest.
