Dr. Mary Neal, an orthopedic surgeon and former director of spine surgery at USC, experienced a near-death episode while whitewater kayaking in South America in 1999. Her kayak became pinned underwater after going over a waterfall, with the force of the current folding her body over the front deck and holding her submerged under eight to ten feet of water. Despite her medical training and efforts to free herself, she remained trapped underwater for an extended period, leading to drowning and cardiac arrest.
During her drowning, Dr. Neal experienced being held and comforted with reassurance that everything would be fine regardless of outcome. She underwent a comprehensive life review where she relived both wonderful and painful events, experiencing them from her own perspective and simultaneously from the perspectives of others involved. She gained complete understanding of the backstories and chain of events behind every interaction. She described her consciousness as vastly expanded, experiencing eternity in every moment, understanding the order of the universe, mathematics, and the interconnectedness of all life. Dr. Neal observed her body trapped underwater and could feel her knees breaking and ligaments tearing as the current pushed her body free, yet felt no pain. She watched her friends performing CPR and could hear them calling to her. She perceived herself as separate from her body while maintaining her analytical abilities. She experienced receiving vast knowledge about universal truths and felt she understood everything about how the universe works, though this knowledge later became inaccessible after recovery. Her experience was later detailed in her book "To Heaven and Back" and has been presented at scientific conferences. The extended duration underwater and subsequent successful resuscitation were documented by multiple witnesses who were present during the accident and rescue.
