Karen suffered a ruptured appendix with gangrene that led to severe internal bleeding during emergency surgery. The surgical team was working to control the hemorrhaging when her condition deteriorated catastrophically. She went into cardiac arrest on the operating table, requiring immediate resuscitation efforts while the surgeons simultaneously tried to address the source of the bleeding.
During her cardiac arrest, Karen looked down and saw her body surrounded by many medical personnel. She felt no attachment to her physical form or regret about leaving it behind. Instead, she experienced an overwhelming sense of lightness and freedom - freedom from the intense pain of recent weeks and from the emotional pain of her life up to that point. She also noted that before dying she had questioned everything, but in this state she knew everything and had no more questions. Karen observed the surgical scene from above, noting the many people working around her body during the emergency. She could see the medical team's frantic efforts to save her life while she remained completely detached from the situation. Her primary observation was the contrast between the chaos below and her own state of peace and complete knowledge above. The experience fundamentally transformed Karen's perspective on life and death. The shift from questioning everything to knowing everything during her NDE provided her with a sense of certainty about consciousness surviving bodily death.
