Ingrid, now a 50-year-old woman from Colombia with a PhD, experienced a near-drowning incident at age three when she fell into a reservoir of water. Initially, she was in great distress as she struggled in the water, her heart pounding as she fought against drowning. The panic and terror of a small child unable to swim or call for help created an overwhelming sense of fear and anguish.
Suddenly, Ingrid experienced total relief as all distress vanished. Her heart stopped pounding, everything became absolutely still, and she no longer felt cold or the need to fight. Her body became insubstantial as she separated from it. She noticed a body suspended in the water and recognized it as her own lifeless form, yet felt neither surprise nor fear at this recognition. Instead, she experienced immense joy and freedom. Ingrid observed her own body floating in the water from an external perspective. She could see herself suspended in the reservoir, recognizing the small form as her own three-year-old body. Despite seeing herself apparently lifeless in the water, she felt complete detachment and no desire to return to that body. The experience left Ingrid with a profound understanding that consciousness can exist independently of the physical body. She simply kept moving away without looking back, feeling only joy and freedom rather than the terror one might expect from such a traumatic event.
