In 1996, Arshan from Ghonbad-e Kavus in northeastern Iran was struck by a car after crossing a street intersection. He heard a loud car horn followed by a crashing sound before suddenly finding himself floating in a dark space outside his body. Looking down, he saw a body lying in the middle of the street next to a car, taking time to recognize it as his own. He felt no attachment to it and thought he must have died, yet experienced no sadness.
During his out-of-body experience, Arshan observed events from several feet in the air as people rushed toward his body from every direction. Though he could not hear their voices clearly, he comprehended what they were saying and knew their thoughts and intentions. In the ambulance, he watched the emergency team inject something into his body without success. He felt simultaneously detached from yet somehow still inside his body, experiencing no pain or discomfort while floating higher each second. Arshan described taking on a transparent, non-physical form similar to a human shape. He felt like pure energy, experiencing enhanced eyesight and a pleasant warmth. He could not smell, taste, or feel physical sensations. He observed specific medical procedures including the injection attempts by paramedics. His ability to understand people's thoughts and upcoming statements demonstrated a form of enhanced perception. The experience left Arshan feeling immersed in peace and silence, fundamentally changing his understanding of consciousness and death. He maintained his normal thought processes and mind throughout the experience.
