At the age of five, a child contracted meningitis and fell into a coma. During this life-threatening illness, the child "died" and experienced drifting in a safe and black void where there was no fear and no pain. The child felt completely at home in this place, experiencing a profound sense of peace and safety despite the serious medical condition.
During this experience, the child saw a little girl of about ten years old who seemed to recognize them. The two children hugged, and then the girl revealed remarkable information. She told the five-year-old, "I'm your sister. I died a month after I was born. I was named after your grandmother. Our parents called me Rietje for short." The sister kissed the child, who felt her warmth and love, then told them "You must go now." In a flash, the child was back in their body, opening their eyes to see the happy and relieved faces of their parents. When the child told them about the experience, the parents initially dismissed it as a dream. The child made a drawing of their "angel sister" who had welcomed them and repeated everything she had told them. The parents were so shocked that they panicked, got up and left the room. After a while, the parents returned and confirmed that they had indeed lost a daughter called Rietje who had died of poisoning about a year before this child was born. They had made a deliberate decision not to tell their living children about Rietje until they were old enough to understand the meaning of life and death. This case provides strong veridical evidence as the child had knowledge of a deceased sibling they could not have known about through normal means.
