In 1944, the renowned psychologist Carl G. Jung suffered a heart attack that triggered a profound out-of-body experience. During this medical crisis, Jung found himself high up in space, observing Earth from an extraordinary vantage point. His description of what he saw is remarkable because it accurately corresponds with images from space that would only become available through satellite photography some forty years later.
From his elevated position, Jung saw the globe of Earth bathed in a gloriously blue light. He could see the deep blue sea and the continents clearly. Below his feet lay Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), and in the distance ahead he could see the subcontinent of India. His field of vision included the Earth's global shape with outlines that shone with a silvery gleam through the wonderful blue light. He observed many places where the globe seemed colored or spotted dark green like oxidized silver. Jung described seeing far to the left a broad expanse of the reddish-yellow desert of Arabia, appearing as though the silver of the earth had assumed a reddish-gold hue. He could see the Red Sea, and far back, as if in the upper left of a map, he could just make out a bit of the Mediterranean. He also saw the snow-covered Himalayas, though in that direction it was foggy or cloudy. He noted that he did not look to the right at all and knew he was on the point of departing from the earth. Later Jung discovered that to have such an extensive view, one would have to be approximately a thousand miles high in space. He described the sight of Earth from this height as the most glorious thing he had ever seen. This experience occurred decades before humans had traveled to space or obtained photographic images of Earth from orbit.
