A patient undergoing surgery experienced complications that led to cardiac arrest lasting four and a half minutes. During this critical period when his heart had stopped, the patient suddenly became aware of hovering over the foot of the operating table, watching the activity below around the body of a human being. He soon realized this was his own body being worked on by the medical team.
From his position above the operating lamp, which he could see through, the patient heard everything that was said in the operating room. He specifically remembered them shouting "Hurry up, you bloody bastard" during the frantic resuscitation efforts. Even more remarkably, he reported not just hearing their spoken words, but being able to read the minds of everybody in the room. He seemed to have access to their thoughts during this period. The medical team worked intensely to restore his heartbeat, which took four and a half minutes - dangerously close to the threshold where brain damage typically occurs from oxygen deprivation. The doctor expressed his belief that the patient was dead during the resuscitation. Later, when the patient recovered, the doctor confirmed saying this and was astonished to learn that the patient had heard it. The patient also told them they should mind their language during surgery. This case demonstrates conscious awareness with both auditory and apparent telepathic perception during a period of cardiac arrest under general anesthesia, when no brain function should have been possible. The patient's ability to accurately report specific statements made during his resuscitation was later confirmed by the medical staff.
