On September 23, 1978, E.M. was nine months pregnant when she experienced serious complications during childbirth. The midwife and medical team became urgently quiet as the contractions stopped. During the delivery, she experienced severe blood loss that went initially unnoticed by the nursing staff who were focused on the birth of the child.
During this medical crisis, E.M. suddenly found herself looking down at a woman lying on a bed with her legs in supports. She observed the nurses and doctors panicking, saw large amounts of blood on the bed and floor, and witnessed hands pressing hard on the woman's belly. She watched the woman giving birth to a child who was immediately taken to another room. Then she was pulled through a dark tunnel at enormous speed, experiencing an overwhelming feeling of peace and bliss. She felt intensely satisfied, happy, calm, and peaceful while hearing wonderful music. E.M. saw beautiful colors and gorgeous flowers in all colors of the rainbow in a large meadow. At the far end was a beautiful, clear, warm light. She saw a figure in a light garment waiting for her with an outstretched hand. It felt like a warm and loving welcome. Hand in hand, they moved toward the beautiful warm light. Then the figure let go of her hand and turned around, and she felt something pulling her back. She was awakened by voices of female ER doctors who had resuscitated her. Upon return, she learned that her child had not survived. The experience transformed her completely, though she struggled for years to integrate it, keeping silent about what happened until finding literature about NDEs much later.
