The subject, a minister on the author's pastoral staff, experienced a near-death event while hospitalized and seemingly unconscious from severe sepsis infection. He desperately wanted to reassure them that he would indeed live, but remained locked in a state of conscious paralysis. To emphasize his conviction, he leaned across the table, locked eyes with the interviewer, and stated with intensity: "It was real—as real as me sitting across from you and talking to you now. Nothing could ever convince me otherwise." The experience left him with unshakeable faith in the afterlife's reality.
