Eleven-year-old Tonecia was on an inner tube at a Delaware beach when she ventured too far from shore. Her grandmother, who had raised her, motioned for her to return. Misjudging the water depth, she stepped out of the inner tube and immediately began drowning. She left her body and could see herself in the water below while observing the scene from above.
From her out-of-body perspective, Tonecia witnessed multiple events simultaneously. She saw her grandmother trying to reach her in the water, and remarkably, she observed her brother cut his left foot during the chaos of her drowning incident. She then transitioned to a beautiful, peaceful meadow-like realm filled with brilliant colors unlike anything on earth - yellows and greens of incomparable beauty. She felt deeply loved and at peace in this picturesque otherworldly environment. Tonecia was rescued by two white men who appeared on the segregated "black beach," pulled her to shore, and then mysteriously disappeared before anyone could identify or thank them. Their sudden appearance and disappearance added a mysterious element to her rescue. On the way to the hospital, when Tonecia asked her brother about his injured foot, she was met with complete silence - he could not process or accept that she had witnessed his accident while she was drowning and out of her body. The experience transformed Tonecia from a mean, self-centered, and egotistical person into someone peaceful and caring who wanted to help others. This profound personality change led her to become a nurse, devoting her entire life to caring for others' needs.
