Five-year-old Robert underwent a tonsillectomy at a local doctor's office. Immediately after the ether mask was placed over his face, he found himself above the domed operating light looking down at his body below. From this elevated perspective, he discovered a layer of dust on top of the light fixture that would not have been visible from below. He experienced 360-degree vision without needing to move or turn.
From his out-of-body position, Robert witnessed a medical emergency unfold. His mouth was pried open and he was covered up to his neck as the medical team flew into a frenzy. The nurse urgently yelled "Doctor!" and the physician swung around commanding "Stand back!" The scene horrified young Robert as he watched what appeared to be a life-threatening crisis during what should have been a routine procedure. The experience ended with him waking up in bed, unable to speak and feeling miserable. Two weeks later at his follow-up appointment, Robert described everything he had witnessed to the doctor, including the dust on the light and the emergency response. The doctor dismissed his account to Robert's mother, winking and attributing it to ether-induced dreams and hallucinations, claiming children often tell such stories. However, Robert interpreted the doctor's extreme eagerness to get him out of the office as confirmation that a serious medical emergency had indeed occurred. The experience had lasting effects on Robert's spiritual development, leading to challenging questions about church dogma that eventually resulted in him being removed from Sunday school for asking questions his teacher could not or would not answer about religious teachings.
