Eleven-year-old Cecil attempted to save his drowning brother in a river, but both boys went under multiple times. As Cecil could no longer stay afloat, he heard a strange ringing sound and felt peaceful as his spirit left his body and entered a black void. He moved toward a distant pinpoint of light, accelerating as if on top of a train, then stepped into a realm where everything emitted its own light with colors more vivid than earthly ones.
He observed cities connected by roads and three men who projected themselves across a river to greet him, one of whom he recognized as Lynn Bibb, a relative who had died weeks before Cecil was born. These beings were a welcoming committee to escort him to the first city, which represented an eternal progression system from city to city. A brilliant light source filled with love, which Cecil called God, communicated telepathically with him, showing him the nature of death through visions of car accident victims - some spirits emerged while others who didn't believe remained trapped in their bodies. God explained that hell is not a place but a state of lacking wisdom and refusing to progress, and confirmed there is no Devil. Cecil was taught that "right is helping and being kind" while "wrong is not only hurting someone but not helping when you can." Cecil recognized Lynn Bibb despite never having seen him before, as this relative had died before Cecil's birth. The being showed Cecil universal truths and reasons for everything before allowing him to return to help his widowed mother with four children. Upon return, Cecil woke facedown in river mud, was mysteriously lifted to the surface, expelled large amounts of water, and discovered his brother had died in the incident.
