Jack Bybee, a 26-year-old man hospitalized in South Africa with severe pneumonia, fell into a coma. Upon floating out of his body, he was met by Nurse Anita, who had been exceptionally kind to him and had recently taken time off feeling unwell. In this spiritual encounter, Anita revealed she had died in a car accident, explaining her boyfriend had given her a red MGB sports car for her birthday, and in her excitement she had raced down the highway into "Suicide Corner" and crashed into a concrete telephone pole. Jack was astounded as he had no way of knowing these facts while comatose. After recovering, he asked other nurses about Anita but they remained quiet, only saying she no longer worked there. Unknown to Jack, the head nurse had forbidden staff from telling him about Anita's death to protect his fragile condition. Only after discharge did his parents confirm that Nurse Anita had "been killed exactly as she had told me." This case is a classic "Peak in Darien" experience where someone learns of an unknown death during their NDE. The controlled hospital environment where staff were explicitly instructed not to tell him strengthens the claim that he couldn't have learned this through normal means.
